- DEV326: Data Modeling with PowerDesigner 12
- Learn how PowerDesigner 12.0 can be used as a tool during the data analysis, data modeling, and database design processes. A well-known “best practice” in Information Engineering (IE) is to model the information at both a conceptual and physical level. Employ PowerDesigner to create a conceptual data model with entities, attributes, and relationships. Learn to target a DBMS, generate and enhance a physical data model, and then generate a database creation script for database tables, indexes, views, triggers, and stored procedures. You will also explore the reverse engineering features of PowerDesigner to create physical, conceptual, and object-oriented models from an existing database, as well as learn iterative modeling by using compare and merge model features and synchronizing physical data models with corresponding databases and vice versa. Finally, learn how to use and mange the Enterprise Repository for storing and sharing enterprise models across disparate groups and locations.

- SYB144: Logical Database Design - Learn to apply consistent methodology in creating a logical database design that is based on the relational data model and confirms to formal standards of normalization. Examine techniques for gathering and analyzing business rules, using entity-relationship diagrams to capture conceptual data designs, and modeling business processes with data flow diagrams. Study the theoretical foundations of the relational data model and how to apply its principles to produce a fully normalized logical data model and design.

- EDB110: Physical Database Design - Learn how to plan and implement Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE) tables, indexes, and data integrity to satisfy the data and processing requirements of an enterprise. Gain exposure to all major physical design principles needed to create optimal database designs on the ASE 12.0 platform. Study a formal design methodology that starts with a logical data model, and translate that into a relational representation. Both local and distributed requirements are used to design the most optimal physical implementation possible. Course material also covers parallel query processing; enhanced partition statistics updates; bi-directional scans of indexes; higher maximum number of table references; DOL locking schemes, page formats and indexes; mixed indexes; enhanced alter table command; table-specific identity gaps; and Java in the database.
